Research Summary
Professor Stern explores how innovation -- the production and distribution of “ideas” -- differs from more traditional economic goods, and the implications of these differences for entrepreneurship, business strategy, and public policy. His research in the economics of innovation and entrepreneurship focuses on the drivers of commercialization strategy for technology entrepreneurs, the determinants of R&D productivity in both the public and private sector, and the role of incentives and organizational design on the process of innovation.
He works widely with both companies and governments in understanding the drivers and consequences of innovation and entrepreneurship, and has worked extensively in understanding the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in competitiveness and regional economic performance.
