Project Start Date May 2015
The Mapping Imaging Spectrometer for Europa (MISE, pronounced “mize”) is being developed for the Europa Clipper mission and will identify and map the distributions of organics, salts, acid hydrates, water ice phases and other materials to determine the habitability of Europa's ocean. MISE is a mapping spectrometer, a type of instrument that produces a 2D map of individual spectra, in this case spectra of infrared light. Each spectrum is a measurement of the brightness of light reflected from a surface as a function of wavelength (color) and can be used to determine the composition of the surface.
The MISE instrument development is being lead out of JPL by Dr. Diana Blaney.
