New MIT tool could make possible a safer, more effective sequestration process. One possible approach to the challenge of cutting the amount of CO₂ that reaches the atmosphere involves capturing greenhouse gases such as CO2 at the source—an electric power plant, for example—and then injecting them underground. To help make a process like this more feasible, MIT engineers have come up with a software tool to determine how much CO2 can be sequestered safely in geological formations.
